The most important thing you should know is that works of art including paintings, antiques, hunting trophies, etc. are allowed to be taken out of country only if you have the permission issued by Ministry of Culture. Those documents are usually drawn up by the souvenir shop at additional 10% of your purchase price. But, the documents are usually processed 3-7 days, so you should take that into account when making purchase.
If you’re buying foodstuff, such as smoked fish, Kamchatka crab, be sure it is vacuum packed or canned for you to be allowed to take it out of country. Sturgeon caviar is allowed for export in limited amount of 250 grams per person, provided a receipt is shown providing that it was bought at a store licensed to sell it to foreigners.
PROHIBITED IMPORTS: Photographs and printed matter directed against the Russian Federation, weapons and ammunition, narcotics, fruit and vegetables.
PROHIBITED EXPORTS: Lottery tickets, electrical appliances, arms, some computer hardware, more than 1.5 litres of vodka, carpets, works of art and antiques (unless permission has been granted by the Ministry of Culture), precious metals and furs.
